Crimson Bears' Chapman interested in marine biology

Posted: Tuesday, October 26, 2010

Juneau-Douglas senior Kalea Chapman is a defensive specialist for the Crimson Bears volleyball team and a shortstop for the reigning state champion softball team, and though sports take up a lot of her time, it's not the only thing she's interested in.

When did you start playing volleyball and why have you stayed with it?

"I started playing in sixth grade. I stayed with it because it's really fun, I kept getting better and just the team comradery, and the people I play with are fun to be around."

What other sports have you tried?

"I've done dance, gymnastics, soccer, basketball and softball."

Why is it important to have so many activities going on?

"It makes life more enjoyable and it forces you to make healthy and right choices. Being busy, you never get bored. There's always something new to do, and there's always some new goal to reach for. You meet a lot of new people and you get to travel a lot, and it keeps you in shape most of all."

¿What are the expectations the remainder of the volleyball season?

"Expectations are pretty high as long as we're playing our game. This weekend, we weren't and you could just tell that something was off. We're kind of in a slump right now but if we get back to our 'A' game and play our hearts out, I think we can finish on top. In these next few practices, we're really going to focus hard, really pound it down and just give it our all."

What are your plans for next year?

"I'm looking to play softball in college. I've been offered a few scholarships but I'm just going to keep waiting and see which one the best one is. I travel with Arctic Storm in the summer, and last year all four of the seniors were recruited and signed on with college teams, and so I'm really looking forward to that. I've been writing letters back and forth to the University of Colorado, University of Michigan, a few schools from South Carolina and stuff like that, but I'm really unsure right now."

What are your academic interests?

"I took oceanography last year and that was one of my favorite classes I've ever taken in my life. Marine biology is a big (interest) because I like working with marine animals. Whenever I go to Hawaii I always want to go to the ocean to swim with the dolphins, or I want to go to the aquarium. But I took auto last year and that was really interesting, and interior design is also interesting so I'm really not sure yet what I want to study in college.

Interesting hobbies?

Hula-hoop tag. We made up this game one year and it was a big hit. It was really fun Also hiking and swimming.
