Juneau spikers close out season in Sitka

Posted: Friday, October 27, 2000

The Juneau-Douglas High School volleyball team will close out its regular season this weekend with a pair of Region V-Class 4A matches in Sitka tonight and Saturday.

The Crimson Bears have already clinched the regular-season title, but these will be big matches to build Juneau's momentum for the Region V meet Nov. 3-4 in Craig. Juneau has a 5-1 region record, while Ketchikan is 4-4 and Sitka is 1-5.

"We haven't played them since very early this season," Juenau assistant coach Dale Bontrager said. "It's been a long time. I know we've improved since then. But I'm sure they have also. They've got a lot of potential, and on any given day anyone can win."

Sitka is led by setter Kim Uddipa, while middle blocker Heather Hawk can be a force inside when her game is on.

Juneau just returned from Anchorage, where it lost a non-conference match to Chugiak then won the Blue Division title in the Service-Dimond Tournament. Bontrager said the season has been kind of a roller-coaster ride, as Juneau completely turned over its roster from last season's second-place finish at state, but the Crimson Bears are starting to come together as the season winds down.

"We played a lot more consistently in Anchorage," he said. "We played a lot better and it was good for our confidence building. Now we know what we can do when we play together."
