Shop owner won't rebuild after fire

JUNEAU - The owner of the popular Fisherman's Bend gas station and store in Auke Bay said he doesn't think it's likely that he will rebuild the store, which burned down last February.

Troy Andrew cited worsening economic outlook and the increase in big-box stores as reasons why he doesn't think he can afford to rebuild.

Andrew said no final decisions have yet been made, and the property is currently available to lease.

"We're on hold right now," he said.

The fire destroyed much of the food, liquor and fishing store, which was a favored shopping spot for fisherman and Auke Bay locals. The house attached to the store was also destroyed.

No one was hurt in the blaze, which authorities said was set intentionally.

Juneau police Sgt. David Campbell said an investigation into the alleged arson was still open and asked that anyone with information about a possible suspect contact police.
