PALMER - An Alaska firm has won the contract to build and design a $220 million state prison.

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough has chosen Neeser Construction for work on the Goose Creek Correctional Center.

The recommendation goes to the assembly in December for final approval.

The Point MacKenzie Correctional Center will be a 1,536-bed facility located nine miles from the Port MacKenzie dock.

Borough officials say the prison is expected to generate up to 700 construction jobs and 350 prison jobs.

Construction is expected to start in the spring.
