The deadline for schools to register students for the annual Poetry Out Loud recitation contest is Nov. 12. This contest encourages high-school students to learn poetry through memorization, performance and competition, and helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage.
Starting in December, students can participate in classroom, school and regional contests. Finalists advance to a state competition in Juneau on Feb. 22, 2011. The state champion will then travel to the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington, D.C., on April 27-29, 2010. The national winner receives a $20,000 college scholarship.
Jessica Wilder of Chugiak High School won the Alaska State Poetry Out Loud Championship in February 2010.
Poetry Out Loud is presented by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, in partnership with the Alaska State Council on the Arts and Juneau Arts & Humanities Council.
