First cargo ships to plug in for power in Tacoma

Posted: Thursday, October 28, 2010

TACOMA, Wash. - Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. is unveiling two cargo vessels that will be able to plug in and get electrical power while docked in Tacoma.

Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire and other officials are celebrating at a ceremony Wednesday at the Port of Tacoma.

Officials say the plug-in technology will reduce pollution by allowing TOTE's ships to turn off their engines while in port.

TOTE retrofitted two ships to accommodate power connections on shore. The private company is based in Federal Way, Wash., and serves Alaska's freight and cargo market.
