ANCHORAGE - Anchorage School Superintendent Carol Comeau says there will be layoffs and program cuts to make up an expected budget shortfall of $20 million.
She spoke to the Anchorage Assembly Tuesday as it debated the property tax level for next year's budget.
The Anchorage Daily News reports the assembly approved a 1.6 percent local tax increase, the same percentage Mayor Dan Sullivan has proposed for the city budget.
This year's budget totals $789 million, with $193 million coming from local taxes. About half the funding comes from the state and the rest is federal money.
The biggest district cost is personnel - 89 percent. Comeau says teachers are scheduled to get a 2 percent cost-of-living increase next year.
