U.S. Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, has written a letter to U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Robert Papp urging him to consider using the decommissioned Storis as a museum in Juneau.
Begich noted that the passage of the Coast Guard Authorization Act omitted the Storis, and was recommended to go to General Services Administration. Begich wrote proponents of turning Storis into a museum fear going to the GSA on the belief that the division will either scrap it or sell it to a foreign nation.
Begich states the Storis has a 60-year history in Alaska and would be restored with private funding that would memorialize the Coast Guard's involvement in Alaska history.
Begich asks Papp to delay any transfer of the vessel until the matter can be worked out in legislation or other means.
