In my classroom, we don't use "putdowns." Instead, we offer "appreciations" or compliments for a classmate's work or effort. It's a pity that similar rules don't apply to state election campaigns.
This time of year is ripe with smears, insinuations and other innuendoes. Well, I've got nothing but good things to say about Sen. Kim Elton. I've known Kim for 20 years, as a journalist, as an administrator, as a legislator and as a friend. I've always respected his judgment and decisions. I've also seen Kim work with children and often invited him to my classroom for class gatherings and events. He always comes, not because I ask, but because of the children. Kim cares about this city and its people. His is a reasonable voice and it stands out in the Alaska Legislature. He deserves your vote in November. We need more people of his caliber making decisions about Alaska's future.
