Former Juneau resident Melvin R. Snell died Oct. 23, 2008, in Warrenton, Ore. He was 70.
Born Dec. 28, 1937, in South Bend, Wash., to Harold Snell and Ruby Kay King Snell, he was raised in Raymond, South Bend, Aberdeen and Hoquim, all in Washington. He served more than 22 years with the U.S. Coast Guard, retiring in 1976.
He married Carol S. Renhard in February1966 in Juneau. He and his family left Anchorage in 1974 to live in Clatsop County, Oregon, where he resided ever since.
After his retirement from the Coast Guard, he worked at the Seaside General Hospital and the Warrenton Mill as a machinist. His hobbies included bowling, playing golf, people watching and he loved being with his children and grandchildren.
He was a member and past commander of the American Legion, Clatsop Post 12. He also was a member of Voiture No. 547.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Snell, of Warrenton, Ore.; daughters, Carla Iverson and husband, Todd, of Banks, Ore., and Ellen Blevins and husband, Bill, of Portland, Ore.; son, Carl Brockway and wife, Michelle, of Fairbanks; grandsons, Walker Iverson and Logan Iverson, of Banks, and Kevin Brockway and Carl Brockway, of Fairbanks; granddaughters, Avery Iverson, of Banks, and Madilyn Davis, Ellie Ryan Davis and Kathleen Blevins, all of Portland; sisters, Nancy Cross, of Eugene, Ore., and Joy Toby, of San Diego; and special friends, Barbara and Kent Birdeno, and Curtis and KC Birdeno, all of Astoria.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary. Graveside services with military honors will follow at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton. A reception will follow at the Serendipity Restaurant in Warrenton.
