KENAI - Two residents of Kasilof have been charged with stripping wire from a fish processing plant, melting it down and selling the metal as scrap.

Alaska State Troopers told the Peninsula Clarion that 31-year-old John Arnold Gilbert Wardas and 27-year-old Sarah Lorraine Urdahl sold the metal for about $1,600 but caused $25,000 to $50,000 in damage to Icicle Seafood's plant.

They face felony burglary, theft and criminal mischief charges.

The metal was sold to two Soldotna-area salvage companies.

Urdahl told troopers it took two to three nights to extract the wire.

Icicle Seafoods manager Duff Hoyt says the suspects stripped everything down to the transformers and did a "pretty thorough job."

He says the building can't be used because of the damage and the company is looking into repairs.
