I've watched gubernatorial debates and seen political ads. Contrary to Murkowski's posturing, Ulmer set forth a July 31 written plan for growing Alaska's economy, calling for: developing Alaska's natural resources more effectively, diversifying the economy, creating a stable climate for investment (a fiscal plan), investing in Alaska's infrastructure (ports, roads, airports, etc.), and making further investments in education and training. Murkowski sets forth platitudes not plans: have faith, hope, and trust in him to grow Alaska out of its stagnation or save its way out of a fiscal crisis.
Murkowski would have us believe that enough new natural resource revenue will arrive prior to the impending spend-down of the CBR (estimated in the first quarter of 2005). Based on my research, roads require five or more years from concept to drivability. New oil in the line takes similar time. Marketable gas from the gas pipeline is projected for 2010. Opposition makes timber problematic. All Murkowski's proposals require environmental impact statements that can take years and will come into being well after his term would end.
My point is that Sen. Murkowski is, at best, ignorant of the facts, or, in the worst case, just telling us what he thinks we want to hear. Lt. Gov. Ulmer is being honest with us, and shows great courage and integrity by doing so.
We should elect Fran Ulmer Governor.
