Forecasts continue to call for fog

Posted: Wednesday, October 30, 2002

JUNEAU - Juneau will see some fog in the days ahead, but it should be less dense, according the National Weather Service.

"We're looking for it to become less widespread and ... more patchy," meteorologist Michael Mitchell said. "It should be here most nights from here on out."

Visibility at the Juneau Airport was a quarter-mile this morning. Fog at the airport could lift enough to get some flights in later today, he said.

As of 10 a.m. today, Alaska Airlines was unable to get any flights into or out of town and no flights came in Tuesday. Three of eight Alaska Airlines flights made it into Juneau on Monday.

"It is still just in Juneau; other Southeast Alaska cities are OK," company spokesman Jack Walsh said.

Alaska Airlines planned to send planes from Seattle and Anchorage to Juneau today to help get people out of town when the fog lifts, he said. The flights were empty because of the risk of not making it in, he said.

The airline also scheduled a larger 737-900 to fly into Juneau this evening to reduce the backlog, he said. Eleven flights were canceled last week because of fog.

Advanced technology "has greatly reduced the number of cancellations due to fog, however, there still does need to be some visibility," Walsh said.

By Friday, Juneau should see low clouds, light rain and fog, Mitchell said. Fog forms when moist air cools and condenses into ground-level clouds. Warm temperatures and wind help fog dissipate.
