Posted: Wednesday, October 30, 2002

JUNEAU - Juneau-Douglas High School will host the annual All-Comers Volleyball Tournament on Friday and Saturday, and nearly 20 teams from at least nine Southeast communities are expected to play.

Teams from Juneau, Hoonah, Kake, Klawock, Mount Edgecumbe, Petersburg, Sitka, Skagway and Thorne Bay are scheduled to participate in the tourney, with a total of 16 to 19 teams expected. Ketchikan may take part in the event.

Matches are expected to start at 3 p.m. on Friday, with the last match starting at about 9 p.m. On Saturday, the first match should begin at 9 a.m. with the final match at about 8 p.m.

"It's to give everyone as much playing time as possible," Juneau volleyball co-coach Sandi Wagner said of the tournament goals.

Wagner said Juneau will enter six teams. Most of the players will be from the Crimson Bears' junior varsity squads, though some varsity players will take part.

"Every kid who has worked their tail off this season ... they're all going to get a chance to play," Wagner said.
