I am responding to the letter to the editor in the Empire on Oct. 22 written by Marit Carlson Van Dort regarding the incident of dog abuse witnessed at the Eagle Beach Boy Scout Trailhead last weekend.
Sound off on the important issues at
I would like to say thank you to this woman for having the courage to write the letter. The behavior she describes is criminal and in violation of local ordinances prohibiting cruelty to animals. The letter writer also draws the correct conclusion that animal cruelty is closely tied to abuse of partners and children. It would be easy to read this letter, say "what a shame" and go on with our lives. Taking no action allows conduct such as this to continue in the community.
I believe someone knows who this couple is. Reach out to the man and help him get a handle on his anger. Encourage the woman, if she feels the need, to seek out the wonderful services available at the AWARE shelter serving victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. And let animal control (789-0260) know where this dog is to help it get in a safer situation. Let's work together as a community to help prevent this type of violence.
