Coast Guard offers Safety training for fishermen, boaters

JUNEAU - Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will offer an 18-hour fishing vessel safety and drill conductor course in Juneau Nov. 4 and Nov. 5 in the conference room on the 2nd Floor of the at the DMV/Trooper Building off Glacier Highway.

The course U.S. Coast Guard approved and meets the training requirements for commercial fishing vessels. The course is open to all mariners, whether or not they fish commercially. It is available at no cost to commercial fishermen due to funding from National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and the USCG.

During this USCG-approved training participants will practice the use of emergency equipment that should be onboard any commercial fishing or other sizable vessel. This includes: PFDs, life rafts, immersion suits, EPIRBs and fire extinguishers. Participants will learn and practice emergency procedures such as "man overboard, abandon ship, fire fighting and flooding control."

Those who have already taken the course are encouraged to attend again and refresh their skills.
