Title and Company: Owner and framer, Art Matters

Services: Art Matters offers full-service custom matting and framing of prints and original art, mirrors, and shadow boxes, which is the framing and matting of three-dimensional objects. The store is located in the Perseverance Glass Co., which is owned by Kegler's husband, Russell. Kegler and her husband opened the frame shop in 1999.

"We began thinking about opening a framing operation so that we could frame mirrors," Tana Kegler said. "Some framing shop equipment came up for sale, so the idea just grew into a full-service custom matting and framing shop from there."

Before buying the equipment, Kegler took a matting and framing course from the University of Alaska Southeast to see if she liked the trade.

"I just loved it," she said.

She learned framing basics and then practiced until she got it perfect, she said. Three years into the business, she has built a loyal customer base and only 20 percent of her frame jobs are for mirrors.

She attends a yearly framing show in Las Vegas, where she can continue her framing education, learn new design techniques, and see what new frames are being offered.

"The most important part of my job is getting to know a customer and knowing what they like in terms of design," Kegler said. "People usually have their art work longer than they have their furniture, and if you use a classic style it's timeless."

Biographical information: Kegler was born and raised in Eastern Oregon and moved to Juneau in 1983. She said she always loved to do creative things and to build things, and she enjoys home decorating and furniture restoration in her spare time.

Family: husband, Russell; son, Ryan, 15; daughter, Laela, 8.

Quotable: "People buy art because it moves them in some way. If you focus in on the part of the art work that they really like, and try to draw in those colors and work in those textures, they'll just love the piece of art when it's finished and they'll keep it forever."

Contact: Art Matters is located at Perseverance Glass, 8375 Old Dairy Road. The phone number for the store is 789-4300.
