Ban bear baiting

Bear baiting is an unnecessary and inhumane act. In the upcoming election, vote yes on Ballot Measure No. 3 to stop bear baiting.

To attract a bear for hunting or photography with human food is sick and lazy as well as dangerous. According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, keeping bears away from human food is perhaps the most important thing we can do to prevent conflicts and confrontations between bears and humans. Hundreds of bears have become addicted to human food and become nuisances because of bear baiting stations over the past few years. Along with this, bear baiting is unfair to the bears and extremely unsportsmanlike. To kill any animal through this method is a horrible act.

If you're concerned about managing bear populations, baiting is not the answer. Many places, such as the Yukon Territory and British Columbia, have shown that bear baiting is unnecessary for controlling bear populations. Many people think that this law would result in arrests and fines for simply putting up a bird feeder in their yard which may attract bears. They are wrong. The fines and arrests would only apply to those who intentionally set out food in order to attract a bear.

I sincerely believe that bear baiting is a cruel and unfair act that is far below human dignity. I strongly urge you to vote yes on Ballot Measure No. 3 in the Nov. 2 election.
