Aiding Women in Abuse and Rape Emergencies (AWARE), Inc. is grateful to the Juneau community for participating in and supporting events to raise awareness of the challenge of domestic violence. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and many partners worked with us to offer a variety of activities and programs.
Thank you to Shotokan Karate Club and teachers, and to Zach Gordon Youth Center and Kristi West for making the Women's Self Defense Class possible. It was a sell-out success.
Thank you to the businesses that supported the fifth-grade poster contest displayed during October at the Mendenhall Mall. The theme was "Peace begins with me. Be the change you want to see." Heartfelt thanks to Glacier Cinemas, The Rock Dump, Foggy Mountain Shop, Augustus Brown Pool, Hearthside Books, Nugget Alaskan Outfitter, Imagination Station, Glacier Mini Golf, Bullwinkle's Pizza, Tasty Treat Frozen Yogurt and Pie in the Sky.
Thank you to all those who supported and ran in the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Fun Run: race coordinator Paul DeSloover, Heritage Coffee, George Subeloff, Kursti Adkins, Isabel Goodwin, Laurel Araki, Samantha Adams, KTOO's Kristin Kranendonk and the runners and walkers who walked and walked in "her shoes."
Thank you to the women participating in the 10-week Healthy Relationships Class for Women- education is power. And thanks to all for wearing a purple or white ribbon in solidarity with survivors of domestic violence. We thank you for your support.
Thank you to those who pass on AWARE's phone number (586-1090), or our website (www.awareak.org), or challenge gender-based violence in any way.
We also want to recognize the courage of the women and children we serve at AWARE's safe shelter, and for those in the community who access our community based services. Your strength and commitment to a life of safety and well-being for yourselves and your families is inspirational.
