KETCHIKAN -- A man was arrested after he swallowed what appeared to be heroin during a scuffle with police in an airport terminal, Alaska State Troopers said.
Troy S. Smart, 30, of Ketchikan, was under observation at Ketchikan Correctional Center today after being transferred from a local hospital, state troopers said. Police obtained a search warrant today to confiscate the substance when it is retrieved.
Police Sgt. Lonny Piscoya suffered a broken leg and ankle during the scuffle on Wednesday and was treated for his injuries and released, police said.
Smart began fighting with airport police and Piscoya when a plastic bag allegedly containing what appeared to be tar heroin was found in the man's luggage, police said. Smart grabbed the bag and swallowed it, police said.
Smart is charged with second degree assault and tampering with evidence. He could face additional drug charges, troopers said.
