Longtime Juneau resident David W. Mitchell died Sept. 22, 2005, in Juneau.

Born in 1921 in Portsmouth, N.H., he attended George Washington University where he met his wife Elaine. During World War II he worked as an electrician at the Boston Naval Shipyard. He then moved to California.

In 1964, he reconnected with high school friend Gil Bixby of Juneau and traveled north. He brought his family in 1965 to Juneau. They assisted the Bixbys with the operation of Taku Lodge from 1965 to 1969.

He worked for Cordova Airlines, Alaska Airlines and the Alaska Marine Highway System. He retired in 1983.

He was among the founders of KTOO radio and television in the early 1970s. He had a lifelong interest in electronics and computers.

He is survived by his children, Mike, Melanie and Kelly; his grandchildren, Mary, John, Annie and Gwyn; and his many friends at Fireweed Place and throughout Juneau.
