KENAI - Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Dave Carey says his chief of staff and special assistant deserve the salaries that are more than 30 percent higher than their predecessors'.

Carey's chief of staff will earn nearly $97,00 this fiscal year, about $23,000 more than the previous mayor's chief of staff.

Carey's special assistant will earn just under $93,000 for fiscal year 2010. That's $25,000 more than her predecessor.

Carey took office one year ago. He tells the Peninsula Clarion the pay increases are "absolutely appropriate."
