Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, should resign. The verdict of guilty on all seven counts of violating federal ethics laws by failing to report tens of thousands of dollars in gifts and services he had received from friends leaves no other option for the senator.
We Alaskans appreciate all that Stevens has done for our state over 40-plus years. Thank you, Stevens. Now, as another gift to our great state of Alaska, step down. Do the honorable thing and resign.
There may be some of us who think how ungrateful this is to ask the senator to leave office. The request, however, is filled with gratitude for the senator's service and for the esteem of his office.
The court says it's over, and it is time for our state to step up and give our votes on Nov. 4 to another candidate and help Stevens see his duty to us if he will not resign on his own.
