JUNEAU - Local Costco employees confirmed the chocolate coins recalled by Canadian food inspectors because of melamine contamination are not sold in Juneau or the rest of the United States.

Canadian food inspectors earlier this month recalled melamine-tainted Sherwood Brands Pirate's Gold Milk Chocolate Coins. They were sold at Costco stores and other dollar or bulk stores in Canada.

Sherwood Brands said in a statement that none of the tainted candy was sold to stores in the United States.

The recalled Pirate's Gold candies were sold in 840-gram containers of 240 pieces each, with the UPC code 0 36077 11240 7 and lot code 192851.

Melamine is an industrial chemical that can cause kidney failure. Melamine-adulterated milk products sickened thousands of children in China in September.
