The Juneau-Douglas High School JV and C teams broke up into seven squads as they hosted this weekend's All-Comers Tournament, but it wasn't the best team on paper that took Friday's title.
"Juneau 2", slated to be the Crimson Bears' second-best crew in the tournament, avenged Juneau 1's earlier loss to Mount Edgecumbe's top team and took home the title from Friday's 13-team broo-ha.
"I wouldn't say we were surprised - I can't say we expected it, though," assistant coach Dale Bontrager said. "They played with confidence, they hustled, they served well - they were just hitting on all cylinders (Friday)."
Mount Edgecumbe was able to rebound, however, winning Saturday's 20-team tournament by, again, defeating Juneau 1 - this time in the title match.
"We actually had some younger varsity players play on (Juneau 1), and they got some good work in," head coach Sandi Wagner said. "What they were able to do this weekend will help us (on varsity) over these next two weeks."
Specifically, Wagner pointed to the improvement of sophomore Sarah Tarver along the front row and Kalea Chapman as a defensive specialist.
"Generally, I think people just had a lot of fun this weekend," Bontrager said. "Everybody played a lot of volleyball and it was competitive for every single team here, I think."
