JUNEAU - Rod Swope is returning to work today as Juneau's city manager after six months' leave.
Swope announced last year that he would step down because of burnout. The city negotiated the leave as an alternative to his resignation.
During his leave, which began May 1, Deputy City Manager Kim Kiefer filled in as manager.
Swope has held the position since March 2003 and has agreed to two more years, should the Assembly request it.
The city manager oversees about 700 employees and an annual core city budget of about $85 million. The city manager answers to the elected officials of the Juneau Assembly.
Swope returns with a salary of $176,000.
