The 'Storm' is coming

Posted: Sunday, November 03, 2002

Juneau snow enthusiasts better brace for the "Storm." It's expected to hit Thursday night at Centennial Hall with a 100 percent chance of snow.

But don't get your shovels and winter coats out just yet. This is Warren Miller's "Storm" - a high-energy, snow-packed film extravaganza sure to get viewers in the mood for the upcoming winter.

Shows are offered at 5:45 p.m. and 8 p.m. and tickets sell for $7. Door prizes will be drawn during intermissions.

"It's a great way to get psyched for the season," said Eaglecrest Ski and Snowboard School Director Jeffra Clough. "It gets us all excited about skiing. Warren Miller does a great job."

This is Miller's 53rd year producing ski movies and he is at the head of the class in the genre. He puts the best skiers and snowboarders in settings that bring out the true essence of winter sports.

"Storm" is no different. Miller brings viewers to popular destination spots such as Aspen, Sun Valley, Steamboat and Whistler as well as more exotic places such as Antarctica and Europe. And yes, Miller once again includes some of Alaska's best stashes with Doug Coombs and Seth Morrison heli-skiing in Valdez, while the some of the top women skiers take the spotlight in Cordova.

Miller narrates the movie in his own humorous way and connects hard-core ski segments with brutal crashes, novelty ice sliding acts and military adventures to give "Storm" an all-around fun time.

The movie is timed around the Saturday's ski swap, giving people an opportunity to drop off their old equipment before watching the film.

"It adds to the excitement of the weekend," Clough said. "But it's also movies that are great for families. The music, footage, and overall, it's good for all ages."
