Spurred by victories in all six relay events, the Juneau-Douglas High School swim team claimed the boys and girls titles at the Region V swim meet held Friday and Saturday at Petersburg's Melvin Roundtree Memorial Pool.
"I planned out what I thought would happen, and the kids exceeded that," Juneau coach John Wray said Saturday.
The Crimson Bear boys accumulated 148 points to win the region title. Ketchikan and Petersburg tied for second with 51 points, Sitka was fourth with 37 points and Craig finished fifth with 7 points.
The Crimson Bear girls won the region title with 128 points, with Petersburg in second place with 61 points. Ketchikan finished third with 53 points, followed by Sitka in fourth place with 41 points and Craig in fifth with 14 points.
"I'm really happy with how they performed," Wray said. "They were very spirited, they were the loudest team, they were confident. They wanted to take control of the pool, and that's what they did."
Juneau's victorious relay teams and individual winners from the region meet are automatically qualified for the state meet this Friday and Saturday at Anchorage's Bartlett High School Swimming Pool. Twelve additional individual swimmers from around the state - selected from the fastest times of all four region meets held around Alaska this weekend - will also get state berths.
In addition to the sweep of the relays - both the boys and girls teams in the 200-yard medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays - the Crimson Bears were buoyed by several individual multiple-event winners.
For the boys, sophomore Paul Hughes led the way by setting Region V meet records with his victories in the 100 breaststroke (59.96 seconds) and 200 individual medley (1:59.29).
Senior Jake Kreuzenstein won the 200 freestyle and sophomore Tyler Hennon won the 500 free.
"It was an excellent swim," Wray said of Hennon's race, which he completed in 5:02.51. "It was a personal best by six seconds."
Junior Kirk Fishel rounded out the Juneau boys individual titles with his win in the 100 backstroke. Juneau finished 1-2-3-4 in that event - Hennon finished second, sophomore Mike Kasten third and senior John Wagner fourth.
The Crimson Bears also claimed second and third place behind Hughes in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 IM. Freshman Aaron Hughes placed second and junior Olin Robus placed third in the 100 breaststroke, while Fishel and Robus claimed second and third, respectively, in the 200 IM.
Other second-place finishers for the Juneau boys were Kreuzenstein in the 500 freestyle, junior Gabe Kelley in diving, sophomore Q Smyth in the 100 freestyle and sophomore Abe Levy in the 100 butterfly. Levy's swim, of 1:02.37, was "incredible," Wray said.
"He dropped over six seconds off his best time," he said.
"I was really psyched and ready to go," Levy said of his swim. "I knew that I was going fast, but I had no clue I was so far ahead of my best time."
The Juneau girls were led by sisters Weather and Kelsey Potdevin, who each won two events. Senior Weather claimed the 200 and 500 freestyle titles, while sophomore Kelsey won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
The Crimson Bear girls also got victories from sophomore Marnita Coenraad in diving and from senior Martha Kaiser in the 50 freestyle, where she just edged Craig's Shona Pierce by 0.05 seconds to win in 26.19.
Junior Lisse Focht finished second in the 200 and 500 freestyle events, junior Heather Harris was second in the 100 free and freshman Lexy Wagoner was second in the diving event.
The Crimson Bears will find out the full list of state berths later today or Monday. Wray said Juneau could have as many as 20 qualifiers.
No matter what happens at state, the Juneau swimmers enjoyed their success at the region meet.
"We had somebody in almost every final, if not every one," Levy said. "It was really exciting to watch."
