A Ketchikan High School student has received a commendation from President George W. Bush, thanking her for a patriotic essay she wrote about the American flag.
Shasta Ann Miller, A Ketchikan High School sophomore, wrote the essay last year for the annual Reflections program. The theme for the contest was "I Hold In My Hand," she said Tuesday, and her essay begins, "I hold in my hand a thread that binds nations.
"A thread that has more meaning than any other earthly symbol. No one thing can surpass the specialness that Americans have attached to it. A symbol, a way of life, a dream, a hardship, and a reality, this woven cloth represents more than words can tell. The American Flag."
Miller said her mother encouraged her to send the essay to Bush, so she did. She said she didn't expect an answer from the president, and was ecstatic when she received a personally signed letter on Monday.
"It was a very nice surprise," Miller said.
In the letter, Bush thanks her for sharing her patriotic message.
"During these extraordinary times, I continue to be inspired by the generosity, compassion and patriotism of America's young people," the letter states. "I hope that you will continue to create projects that challenge your imagination and encourage learning. Working hard and learning new ideas and skills will help you achieve your goals, contribute to our nation and prepare you for future responsibilities."
Miller read the letter Tuesday during a special Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce luncheon in honor of a visit from Gov. Tony Knowles. Miller said she presented a copy of her essay to Knowles.
She said she loves writing, and hopes to make a career out of it.
"It's a real passion of mine," Miller said. "It helps me express myself and what I am feeling."
She said she will frame Bush's letter and use it as inspiration for future writing projects.
