I know any number of overworked, underpaid, unappreciated public employees working for employers other than the school district. In fact, most public employees are being asked to do much more with fewer resources.
Many of them, like our social workers, children's advocates, environmental specialists and public health nurses, would call Ms. Moore's 45-hour week easy money.
These men and women are not working in positive, supportive environments with primarily happy, healthy children and volunteers who can afford to take time off to help.
If they don't burn out from the stress, hostility and daunting state and federal reporting requirements, eventually they will make the salary we pay our elementary school teachers, but they still won't get Christmas and summer off.
Ms. Moore needs to take a peek outside her comfortable nest and revisit her definition of inequity.
While I fully support compensating educators proportionate to the important work they do, the current political environment dictates that many dedicated professionals, doing equally important work, will have to do it with far fewer resources and very little public appreciation.
Fortunately, there are those among us who don't just love their jobs, but have a passion for the work they do, and will do it regardless of the long hours and lousy pay.
