Crimson Bears swamp Region V competitionAs the Region V Swimming and Diving

Juneau girls claim 11th title in a row; boys win third straight

Posted: Monday, November 03, 2003

The Juneau girls swept the top four places in the diving event, then used a solid 2-4-5-6 performance in the 100-yard butterfly and a 1-3-4-5 finish in the 100 freestyle to break away from the Kings and Vikings. That helped propel the Crimson Bears to their 11th straight girls title, while Juneau's boys team won its third straight region championship. Sitka won the meet's team sportsmanship award.

"Going in, our girls were definitely the favorites," Wray said by phone after the meet ended. "For awhile everything went as planned. But going into the diving we were still bunched together.

"I told them this was where we could really make a move and put some distance on them. Over the next three events we took it to them and opened up a gap."

The Juneau girls only won two individual events - junior Marnita Coenraad in the diving and junior Kelsey Potdevin in the 100 free - and the two freestyle relays (200 and 400). But the Crimson Bears had several swimmers earn second-, third- and fourth-place finishes, which helped them score 121 points. The Ketchikan girls took second place with 74 points, followed by Petersburg with 63, Sitka with 31 and Craig with one point.

"We bunched well, like in the 100 fly," Wray said.

Juneau had more winners in the boys meet, as junior Tyler Hennon won the 200 and 500 freestyle events and senior Olin Robus won the 200 individual medley and finished a close second in the 100 breaststroke. Senior Patrick Hoke led a 1-2-3 sweep in the diving, and the Crimson Bears won the 200 medley and 400 free relays.

The Juneau boys scored 123 points, followed by Ketchikan with 84, Sitka with 71, Craig with 27 and Petersburg with seven points. Despite the 39-point winning margin, Wray said he did have some worries about the boys half of the meet.

"When I scored it out on the (pre-race) heat sheets, it looked like we would lose by three points to Sitka," Wray said. "After Friday's prelims, Ketchikan did well - with their home pool and everything - and Sitka didn't swim that well. We won the first three events today, and I was really pleased with how we rose to the occasion."

One of the keys to Juneau's success was being able to throw strong second and third swimmers in many events and using that quality depth to score points. While some of those swimmers didn't win individual events, they might have been fast enough to earn a berth in the state meet Nov. 7-8 at Anchorage's Bartlett High School Pool. The list of state qualifiers should be announced on Monday.

In the individual swimming events, the state's four region champions and the next 12 swimmers at-large earn state berths, for a total of 16 swimmers. In the relays, the four region champs and the next four teams at-large earn spots (eight teams total). In the diving event, the top three finishers in each region earn state berths, plus the next eight divers at-large qualify for 20 total.

Wray singled out junior Tom Josephson and senior Joey Fox for their efforts this week, as both swimmers dropped significant amounts of time and moved ahead of rival competitors. Josephson finished fourth in both the 200 and 500 free events, while Fox was third in the 100 backstroke and sixth in the 100 butterfly.

"That provided a lot of points for the team," Josephson said of the depth. "I dropped two seconds in the 200 and five seconds in the 500. I was feeling really good. Everything fell into place. We're really happy. All through the meet everyone was pumped up. It shows this isn't one person, but a whole team."

"I felt really good with the back," Fox said. "I started the season with a 1:11, and I set a goal to be 1:05 by Southeast. I dropped to 1:06 in the prelims and went 1:05 today. I was really pleased. In the butterfly, I was surprised when I went a 1:06 in Juneau (at the Juneau Invitational in September) because I didn't think I was capable of going that fast. (Teammate) Abe Levy got me down to a 1:05."

Even though he didn't win the diving event, one person who clinched a berth at state was senior Nathan Schroeder, who finished second to Hoke. Hoke won with 338.55 points, followed by Schroeder with 276.80 and junior Gabe Kelley with 274.75. Kelley finished 12th at state last year, but this was the first region meet for Hoke and Schroeder.

"Yesterday I was having trouble getting started," said Schroeder, who also took his SAT exam on Saturday and missed most of his warm-up time. "I was nervous and I failed one dive. I was third yesterday (after five dives) and only eight points ahead of fourth place. But today I got second. I was a lot more relaxed. I was surprised with how well I did. It was my first time doing 11 dives."

Ketchikan's Ben Voetberg won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke to join Hennon as the only other boys double-event winner of the meet. Other boys event winners were Ketchikan's Ben Rosenfeld in the 100 fly, Sitka's Carrington Gorman in the 50 free, Sitka's Matt Way in the 100 breast and the Ketchikan 200 free relay team.

In the girls meet, three swimmers won two events each - Petersburg's Carole Triem, Ketchikan's Elizabeth Jagusch and Ketchikan's Kate Gallaway. Triem won the 200 free and 100 back, Jagusch won the 50 free and the 100 breast and Gallaway won the 200 IM and the 500 free to finish as the only girls double-event winners. Also winning an event was Petersburg's Abby Jackson in the 100 fly, while Petersburg also claimed the 200 medley relay.
