JUNEAU - Northern Light Church will hold rehearsals on Sunday afternoons in November for all singers interested in performing in the Juneau Lyric Opera and Juneau Oratorio Choir's Dec. 11 presentation of "Sing It Yourself Messiah."

The rehearsals will be held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 6, 13, 20 and 27.

Call J. Allan MacKinnon at 789-0320 with any questions.

Vocal ensemble debuts Sunday, Tuesday

JUNEAU - The Juneau Lyric Opera Vocal Ensemble, a new group of 16 singers, will debut at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at Holy Trinity Church, Fourth and Gold streets; and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, on Cinema Drive in the Mendenhall Valley.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors, and are available at Hearthside Books or the door.

The two hour-long performances will include madrigals, Pergolesi's "Magnificat," a medley from "Les Miserables" and a few other choral standards.

Both concerts will include solos by Philippe Damerval, Brett and Cheryl Crawford, Cyndee Simpson-Sugar, Jay Query, Janet Sanbei, Lisa Corrigan, Lisa Ray, Guy Warren, Jake Soboleff and Peter Anderegg.

Kim Andrews will provide piano accompaniment.

The vocal ensemble was formed this summer, after a group of singers expressed interest in starting a regular choral company, something more than a temporary group for a single performance.

The Lyric Opera held auditions in June, and the ensemble began rehearsing in September.

Jan Levy will direct the group - her first foray into choral directing since the 1980s. Levy, born and raised in Juneau, started the University Singers in the 1970s at the University of Alaska-Juneau and also taught music in the Juneau School District. She has performed with the Juneau Lyric Opera and the Juneau Symphony and provided musical direction for the Juneau Lyric Opera and Perseverance Theatre.

"It is a tremendous privilege to work with these fine singers," Levy said. "Not only are they gifted musically, they are all wonderful individuals and it is great fun to spend time with them."

Gold Street Music switches venue

JUNEAU - Gold Street Music, the local folk gathering on the first Saturday of every month, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, in Centennial Hall's Hickel Room.

The event is normally held in the undercroft of Holy Trinity Church, but has switched locations due to a scheduling conflict with Theatre in the Rough's production of "Comedy of Errors."

This month's lineup features Albert McDonnell; Cheryl Cook and Kathy Hocker; Mary DeSmet and Greg Burger; Riley Woodford; and Jane Roodenburg.

Each act will have 20 minutes, and the night should conclude around 10 p.m. Cookies, tea and coffee are usually available.

Admission is $5. Doors open at 7 p.m., and music starts at 7:30. More than 50 people attended the October showcase.
