Fishing boat sinks in Sedanka Pass

ANCHORAGE - Authorities said a fishing vessel with 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel on board sank as it was being towed through Sedanka Pass.

The U.S. Coast Guard said early Monday it was working with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and Magone Marine Services to recover the sunken vessel northwest of Egg Island. The Western Viking, a Magone Marine Services salvage vessel, was towing the fishing boat to Beaver Inlet.

The Coast Guard said a two-mile sheen reported in the area near where the Juneau-based vessel sank Sunday afternoon was not expected to cause significant environmental damage.

The Coast Guard said the incident is under investigation.
