ANB opposes legislative move, Chamber supports school bonds

Posted: Monday, November 04, 2002

JUNEAU - Endorsements for statewide ballot initiatives and propositions were made in the final days before Tuesday's general election.

On Saturday, the grand camps of the Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood unanimously approved a resolution opposing Ballot Measure 2, which would move legislative sessions to Anchorage or the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and repeal voters' rights to know of and approve the cost of the move.

A similar resolution was approved earlier in the election season by the Alaska Federation of Natives.

Also receiving an endorsement was Proposition C, which would approve $236.8 million in general obligation bonds to pay for school construction and maintenance projects throughout the state.

The Juneau Chamber of Commerce announced its support for the proposition this morning.

Approximately $13 million would go toward school projects in Hoonah, Skagway, Yakutat, Hydaburg, Kake and Prince of Wales Island. In addition, the proposition, if approved, would trigger between 60 percent and 70 percent debt reimbursement for construction of a new high school in the Mendenhall Valley.

Another $13 million would go toward construction and maintenance at three satellite campuses at the University of Alaska Southeast. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in conjunction with the University of Alaska Fairbanks would get $9 million for a fisheries research center at Lena Point in Juneau.
