Juneau Adult Hockey Association - Juneau Jamboree women's hockey tournament: Players are expected from Anchorage and the Yukon Territory for this jamboree-style event, the first women's hockey tournament in Juneau. Four games take place on Friday starting at 5:15 p.m.; eight games are on Saturday starting at 8 a.m.; and four more games take place on Sunday starting at 6:45 a.m. at Treadwell Arena in Douglas. This event requires players to register as individuals, then teams will be formed to mix locals and out-of-towners and to merge players of all skill levels onto each team. Southeast Road Runners - Veterans Day 8K: The Southeast Road Runners' last race of the year starts at 10 a.m. (9 a.m. registration) from the Brotherhood Bridge parking lot and covers an out-and-back route on the Kaxdigoowu Heen Dei along the Mendenhall River. Juneau Ski Club/Juneau Ski Patrol 51st Annual Ski Sale - The annual fund-raiser takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, at Centennial Hall. Admission is $2 (age 12-younger free), and there is a door prize of a season pass from Eaglecrest Ski Area. In addition to the ski swap, people can register for Juneau Ski Patrol, the Juneau Ski Club race program and lessons at Eaglecrest, plus they can buy Eaglecrest season passes. People can check in items for sale ($5 minimum sale price per item) from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 4-5, and from 7:30-9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6. Yukon River Quest 2005 registration - The longest annual canoe and kayak race in the world is accepting applications for its 2005 race. The race takes place June 29 through July 3, and the 460-mile (740-kilometer) course follows the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City, Yukon Territory. The deadline for entries is May 26, 2005, and more information is available on the event's Web site at http://www.yukonriverquest.com. Last year 51 teams from around the world, including racers from Southeast Alaska, started the race and 35 teams finished. A limit of 70 teams has been set for 2005 and the race is open to tandem and solo kayaks and recreational tandem canoes and voyageur canoes (that seat 6-14 paddlers). Entry fees are $600 (Canadian) for tandem canoes and kayaks, $300 for solo kayaks and $200 per person for voyageur canoes. The total purse for the race is $15,500 (Canadian), which is distributed among the top 10 teams overall and to category winners. The first-place team receives $3,000 and an entry into the 2006 race. Note to waterfowl hunters - Hunters seeking waterfowl hunting permits to take waterfowl, snipe or cranes on the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge can obtain the permits at Western Auto, Rayco Sales or at the Douglas office of the Alaska Department of Fish & Game. The permit is meant as an orientation for hunters using the refuge and also allows ADF&G to collect duck hunting effort and harvest data. Juneau Parks and Recreation Department survey - Juneau Parks and Rec invites sports participants and parents to complete an Internet survey about P&R sports programs. To combat declining participation the department is considering changing when sports are offered through the year, and it is seeking public feedback. Mount Jumbo preschool open gym - Preschool open gyms for children ages 1-6 and an adult parent or caregiver take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through April. There must be at least one adult present for every four kids. There is a $1 per child fee, or punchcards for $10 and $50 can be bought at the gym, which is located at 909 4th Street in Douglas. Tricycles, mats, balls, a Little Tykes climber, building blocks and a kid-sized basketball hoop are available. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Juneau Community Schools open gyms - Basketball, volleyball and soccer open gyms for adults are available several times a week. Basketball and volleyball open gyms are held Fridays and Sundays from 7-9 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Soccer open gyms are held Saturdays from 6-8 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School and Sundays from 6:45-8:45 p.m. at Floyd Dryden Middle School. Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Recreational badminton - Auke Bay group: This group meets from 8-10 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays at the Auke Bay Community School gym. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
