Art openings include three solo shows at state museum

Here's a look at what's going on around town for the November First Friday Art Walk.

David Depew, photography

Where: The Plant People, 224 Seward St.

Opening reception: 4:30-7 p.m.

Details: David Depew has been a Juneau resident since 1995. In addition to wool socks and sensible shoes he has a background in forensic photography and brings these skills to his explorations of geometry and light.

Seldom Seen Silks & Newly Fired Ceramics by David Riccio

Humanity and Nature II byJackie Manning

Where: The Canvas Art Studio & Gallery, 223 Seward St.

Opening reception: 4:30-7 p.m.

Details: A joint exhibit by silkscreen artist and cermacist Riccio, and painter and mixed-media artist Manning.

Traditional, Pictorial & Art Quilted Wall Hangings by Carol Suring

Where: The Ruby Room, Emporium Mall, behind Heritage Coffee

Opening reception: 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Details: The show will feature various techniques including appliqué, hand dyed fabrics, thread and ink drawing, and traditional piecing.

Dan Fruits, Stephen Gray and Hall Anderson

Where: Alaska State Museum, 395 Whittier St.

Opening reception: 4:30-7 p.m.

Details: Juneau's Dan Fruits, oil paintings and mono-prints exploring Alaskan landscapes, villages, flora and fauna. A gallery walk-thru and slide show of Fruits' work will be held Nov. 14.

Stephen Gray, of Anchorage, will show a select grouping of images from his ongoing project, Billy Adventures series, an exploration of the dialectic between the "good little boy" and the dark boundaries of the human psyche.

Hall Anderson, of Ketchikan, will show a selection of photographs from Anderson's 23 years of work as the staff photographer for the Ketchikan Daily News. The images are from a soon to published book of his work.

Their shows will run from Nov. 6, 2009 thru January 15, 2010.

Paintings by Yvonne Lott

Where: Back Room at the Silverbow, 120 Second St.

No reception, but the Back Room will be open for viewing

Details: Yvonne Lott's black and white expressionist paintings will continue to be shown at the Back Room through the month of November.

Paintings and drawings by UAS student Anna Satre and ceramics pieces by various students

Where: UAS' Bookstore by the Bay, in old Horton's Hradward, Auke Bay

Opening reception: 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Details: Twenty-four-year old student Anna Satre is working towards her Bachelor of Art with a studio emphasis in painting and drawing. She will show 12 drawings and five oil paintings.

USS Juneau exhibit

Where: Juneau Douglas City Museum, 4th and Main Streets

Opening reception: 4:30- 7:30 p.m.

Details: The "Mighty J" exhibit includes objects and photographs from the Juneau-Douglas City Museum's permanent collection related to the first, second and third USS Juneau. "Only Ten Survived" is a philatelic exhibit curated by Glenn L. Smith, Mayor of the Borough of Orrstown, Pennsylvania. "Only Ten Survived" will also be available for viewing on the museum's website as an online slideshow beginning Nov. 6.

In conjunction with this exhibit, a special Coffee & Collections event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 7, titled "Perspectives on the USS Juneau." Commander Kyle Kaker will speak about what it was like to be aboard the USS Juneau when it visited Juneau in 1976.

Perspectives on the USS Juneau will begin at 10:30 am on Saturday, Nov. 14 at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. Coffee will be provided by Heritage Coffee for all presentations in this series.

Barbara Lavallee and Alice Tersteeg

Where: Annie Kaills, 244 front St.

Opening reception: 4:30-7 p.m.

Details: Barbara Lavallee, of "Mama Do You Love Me?" fame, is back for her annual book signing and to show prints and originals. She will be joined by Juneau artist Alice Tersteeg, who will show a series of pastels in an exhibit titled "Chrome and other reflective surfaces."

"Engrained: Turned and Carved" a wood carving and turning exhibit by Dan Branch & Neil Slotnick

Where: JAHC Gallery at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center

Opening reception: 4:30-7 p.m.

Details: The show will present works by Neil Slotnick and Dan Branch. Slotnick turns wood on a lathe to produce bowls, vases, platters, and jewelry from Alaska wood.

He specializes in figured wood, including crotches, burls, and spalted wood, although he also turns antler, bone, and ivory.

Branch carves free-hand various forms including ravens, human faces and figures, salmon, and things inspired by a Picasso line drawing or Archipinko cubism. Examples of all these will be in the show.

Neil and Dan are donating half of their portion of the proceeds of any sale to the AWARE shelter.
