• Hearthside Books: Juneau writer Jean Rogers, author of 2001's "Goodbye, My Island" and 1998's "King Island Christmas," will appear at Hearthside's downtown location from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, to personalize her books for the holidays.

Rogers began writing when the last of her six children were in high school, according to She "finally had time and energy for creative endeavor and the career I had planned since I first learned to read and fell in love with books," she said on the site.

"Goodbye, My Island" and "King Island Christmas" are illustrated by Rie Muñoz.

• Spiral Studio: Lisa Blacher, Stefani Marnon, Nell McConahey and Sherri McDonald, all Juneau artists, will host an art sale from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, and 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 9, at Spiral Studio, 418 Harris St., Suite 212 (the second floor of the charter school building at the corner of Fourth and Harris streets).

Blacher will show hand-carved and painted vessels and tiles, pit-fired vessels and brightly colored tableware. Marnon will display "Nudes and Bars," a collection of Juneau storefronts and nudes.

McDonald will exhibit hand-bound journals, photo albums and books, as well as ornaments and boxes. McConahey will show her hand-crafted metal jewelry in silver, copper and gold filled with stone and glass beads, plus multi-media glass mirrors with found objects and stained glass panels.

Refreshments will be served. For more information, call 463-6992.

• Rock Paper Scissors: Rock Paper Scissors, 245 Marine Way, is closed indefinitely because of a furnace fire in the store's building on Halloween morning. The building was not fire damaged, but it will be evacuated as the sprinkler system is drained.

Rock Paper Scissors may host an art opening later this month.

For more information about the store's reopening, call 586-3110.
