National Native American Heritage Month: Georgianna Foruria

Posted: Friday, November 06, 2009

Alaska Native: Georgianna Foruria (but everyone calls her Annie)

Age: 32

Residency: Juneau, AK

Tribe, moiety, clan: Tlingit, Raven, Coho

Positions: Wife, mother, future nursing student, volunteer firefighter and EMT.

Hobbies: Hiking, swimming, reading to her baby, sewing, crocheting and fishing.

Quote: I seem to have missed out on the negative impacts that being Native has brought to so many of my closer older relatives. Though the stories are so close to me, I have gained the benefits early in life with unexpected offers of employment by Native corporations, college scholarship awards by many Native corporations and overall acceptance by the community as an Alaska Native. Nowhere have I heard that there was something that I couldn't take a part in due to my heritage. Should that ever happen, the debt would be on the other person. This gives me great hope for the rest of the hardworking Native population, as we have come a long way.

• The Juneau Empire will profile a different member of Juneau's Alaska Native community each day during November. To be profiled e-mail or call907-523-2272.
