JUNEAU - The Capital City Fire and Rescue is taking applications for an eligibility list for its scholarship program.
The Capital City Fire and Rescue scholarship program is open to Alaska residents planning to attend the University of Alaska Southeast. Preference will be given to Southeast Alaska residents.
The department has awarded 12 scholarships for the fall semester of 2009. Scholarships are renewable each semester for up to four years of study, provided the student is fulfilling all the requirements of the program.
This scholarship program requires participants to be live-in firefighters with Capital City Fire and Rescue. Openings in the program have occurred and are expected to continue. Thus, an eligibility list is being established to fill these vacancies. The eligibility list will be for the 2010 spring semester and may be renewed for the 2010 fall semester.
For a copy of the application go to www.ccfr.net. or www.juneau.org/ccfr/index.php. Applications must be postmarked by December 1, 2009. A panel of judges will select the winners based on each student's future potential to contribute their knowledge and talents in Alaska. In addition, each student's service to their community, service to their school, and school achievements, will be taken into consideration.
Applicants selected from the review process will be invited to participate in interviews on Dec. 16 and 17. Interviews may be done via teleconference. Along with the application form, students are asked to include in a letter of application, an official high school and/or college transcript, letters of recommendation, a criminal background check, a driving record, media release form and a health screening form.
For more information about the program, contact Division Chief Beth Weldon, scholarship coordinator, at 586-0259.
