JUNEAU - The North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission has agreed to coordinate salmon research in three areas, said Lt. Gov. Fran Ulmer, president of the four-member nation commission.
The commission will look at research in Bering Sea salmon, juvenile salmon and winter salmon, she said.
"This is really a breakthrough because although in past years each member nation has come forward with their own research plan for the year, this time the four nations agreed that they would collaborate," Ulmer said.
The commission's member nations, Japan, Russia, Canada and the United States, agreed to the plan at the eighth annual meeting held in Tokyo.
Asian and North American salmon stocks intermix during the summer in the Bering Sea and in the winter in the North Pacific Ocean.
