Title and Firm: Co-owner, Pappy Poe's Pork Place
Services: Poe considers himself a "barbecue specialist." The menu at Pappy Poe's Pork Place includes barbecue brisket, barbecue pork, barbecue chicken, Polish sausage, smoked turkeys, pork chops and barbecue ribs. "We're most noted for our barbecue ribs in the Juneau area," Poe said. He also caters special events and owns a food cart that is stationed downtown during the summer months.
Biographical Information: Originally from Oklahoma, Poe stopped in Juneau to visit friends nine years ago. "I was on my way to somewhere else, but I wound up staying. I just never left," he said. "I'm one of the original sooners. I'd sooner be here than anywhere else. Juneau is my home." Five years ago, while still working for the Harley-Davidson shop downtown, Poe began to develop his barbecue-catering business. "I started with a 16-foot smoker on wheels that I would drag around town to special events and charitable functions," Poe said. Eventually, he left his day job at the motorcycle shop.
Last summer, Poe and his partner, Gary Lewis, purchased a food cart and began selling barbecue during tourist season. In September, Poe and Lewis moved into Squire's Rest.
Family: Poe has a 16-year-old son, Ryan, and a girlfriend, Malissa Troutd.
Employees: Poe, his girlfriend, his son and his business partner.
Notable: For special occasions, Poe will smoke a whole pig. "I put the pig in a slow smoker with molasses, a special rub and a special sauce and the flavor permeates the whole hog," said Poe. "I smoke a couple of pigs a year and it looks like we started an annual tradition this past Halloween so now, every Halloween, we'll have a pig."
Quotable: "My barbecue recipe has a unique Cajun style from down south that I brought up with me when I moved here. My mom and dad had a beer, bait and barbecue place by a lake in Oklahoma when I was growing up. This recipe has been in my family for a long time."
Contact Information: Pappy Poe's Pork Place is located in Squire's Rest at 11806 Glacier Highway in Auke Bay. The restaurant serves dinner from 5 to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The telephone number is 789-9223.
