Thanks for the courtesy, pal

I would like to take a moment to publicly recognize a considerate member of our community. This acknowledgment is directed towards the driver of the red and white taxi cab that passed by the Federal Building bus shelter just after 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

While I waited on the fire station side of Glacier Avenue in the marked crosswalk, the driver flashed his headlights several times to courteously let me know that, even though he was still quite some distance away, he had no intention of stopping to let me cross. Thanks for the warning! Silly me, I was mistakenly under the impression that vehicles must stop at marked crosswalks when a pedestrian is obviously waiting to cross the street.

Because of the driver's thoughtful gesture, he prevented what would have been my certain, and untimely, demise. I can only imagine the state of my mangled and lifeless body after smashing into his windshield. Or maybe his cab's front end would have knocked me down, allowing the front tires, then the back ones, to trample me to death. What a mess. I'm sure it would have been quite an ordeal to scrub my blood and guts off of the taxi's front fender once returned to the garage. Then again, maybe I'm just being a bit dramatic. The carnage wouldn't have been so bad since he couldn't have been driving faster than the posted speed limit, right?

So, thanks again. It's people like the driver that really make Juneau a "community." Now, if only I could receive the same thoughtfulness from those who run the red light at 10th and Egan every morning, simpletons like me will be able to walk to and from work without serving as an impediment to drivers.
