Our family has struggled with his decision to go, which adds to the difficulty. I am supportive of him and all the others there. I try to talk about him when I can, and some of my friends have listened patiently and asked about him.
I've decided that countries and factions at war are not that different from individuals, families and neighbors who need to find ways to treat each other with respect and kindness, even through the darkest hours.
