Alaska basketball team wins gold at World Senior Games

JUNEAU - The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team won gold and silver medals in the age 55-plus "B" Division at the Huntsman World Senior Games held Oct. 7-19 in St. George, Utah.

The team - which included Mal Menzies and Eric McDowell of Juneau and former Haines High School varsity player Eric Bennett, now of Anchorage - won the gold medal in full-court 5-on-5 competition and the silver in the 3-on-3 competition.

Other team members were Bill Watterson, Lee Maxwell, Norm Bristow and Bob Lewis of Anchorage and Craig Leavitt of St. George, Utah.

The Alaska men's team previously won a gold medal in 2001 and a bronze in 2000. This year they played teams from New York, Colorado, Nebraska, Utah and California.

The World Senior Games are held annually and attract 6,500 athletes age 50-and-over from around the world. They compete in 20 sports over a two-week period in mid-October.
