Alaska Trooper shoots man during traffic stop

FAIRBANKS - A traffic stop in South Fairbanks has led to an Alaska State Trooper shooting and wounding a man.

The shooting happened late Friday night as the trooper attempted to make a traffic stop. Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said the men in the car attempted to run over the trooper with their vehicle and the trooper fired, hitting one of the two occupants in the vehicle. The vehicle then fled before being stopped later. Both men in the vehicle were taken into custody.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case, Peters told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. That is standard procedure when a trooper is involved in a shooting.

The name of the trooper involved in the shooting will not be released for three business days, Peters said.
