Kelsey Preston makes 39 saves as the Bears upend the Bulldogs 6-0

The Juneau-Douglas High School hockey team continued its mastery of Nikiski on Wednesday by opening the season with a 6-0 victory over the host Bulldogs.

All three Crimson Bears' victories in program history have come against Nikiski.

"They're on top of the world and we're letting them feel that way," JDHS coach Steve Foster said. "We told them they get to be happy right now but they still have a long ways to go."

Junior goaltender Kelsey Preston shined between the pipes for JDHS (1-0). Preston stopped all 39 shots she faced to give Juneau-Douglas its second-ever shutout against the Bulldogs (0-3).

The Crimson Bears peppered Nikiski goaltenders Sam Zulkanycz and Tyler Bethune with 42 shots in the win.

JDHS started strongly, scoring twice in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. After a scoreless second period, the Crimson Bears broke open the game with four goals in a span of 7 minutes, 43 seconds.

Sophomore Albert Svensson, junior Evan Wood and senior Ian Nankervis each recorded a goal and an assist in the victory.

Josh Mayer started the third period with an unassisted goal and Nate Hickok added a first-period tally in the win. Trevor Lyden also added an assist.

JDHS travels south to Homer to play in the End of the Road Shootout. The Crimson Bears open the three-day tournament at 7 p.m. tonight against the Mariners.

JDHS then takes on Delta Junction at 5 p.m. Friday and Glenallen at noon Saturday.
