Student artist in the spotlight: Ryan Hoover

Posted: Friday, November 09, 2007

Age: 10.

Sound off on the important issues at

Grade: Fifth.

School: Auke Bay Elementary School.

Art of choice: Singing.

Experience: Four years.

Reason: "I chose Orca Singers because Auke Bay has a really good program. Also my music teacher Ann Boochever makes it fun."

All in the family: "My mom also plays the guitar and I like to listen. My mom also inspired me when she used to sing to me every night. My brother is also in Little Orcas."

Favorites: "I would say I have to like music the best because it just attracts me like a magnet. And my favorite artist is probably Kenny Chesney because he makes his voice just sound like an angel.

Future plans: "My future plans are to learn an instrument well and go to college. ... I will keep singing as long as I get good grades. The only reason I would give it up is if my other sports get in the way."

Activites: "I play other sports like soccer, baseball, and basketball. They are just tremendously fun."

His music teacher Anne Boochever says: "Ryan has been in our school chorus, Orca singers, since third grade. That means for three years he has come to school an hour early to sing one day a week. He now is a volunteer helper for our new 'Little Orcas' singing group for kindergarten, first and second-graders, so he comes early twice a week. He is very dependable and responsible and kind to the other students, plus he has a lovely singing voice. Ryan is successful because he always pays close attention to directions and is quick to jump in and help without being asked."
