Photo: History hidden in the walls

Posted: Sunday, November 09, 2008

Mitch McGraw of Southeast Earthmovers works Saturday to demolish the old Capitol Motors building on the corner of Egan Drive and Main Street. The building is being cleared away to make room for a new parking garage.

The age of the building is uncertain, but crumpled Daily Alaska Empire newspapers that had been used in the walls for insulation in the building were dated December 1957.

One edition from Dec. 27, 1957, included an article about a blizzard that shut down air traffic in Southeast Alaska. An NEA Telephoto image showed Elvis Presley reading his U.S. Army draft notice. One of the lead stories was about a showdown between Anchorage and Juneau High School in basketball.
