Veterans Day 8K

Posted: Monday, November 10, 2003

The air was chilly and the course icy, but 19 runners braved the conditions to complete Saturday's Veteran's Day 8K race on the Kaxdigoowu Heen Trail along the Mendenhall River.

Light freezing rain left a thin coating of ice along many portions of the 8-kilometer - just under 5-mile - course, which started and finished at the Brotherhood Bridge parking lot. The race went on as planned, although the finish line was moved a few dozen feet down the trail so racers did not have to contend with one final short, slippery ascent to the parking lot.

Juneau-Douglas High School cross-country runner Wesley Dinnan was the first finisher overall in 29 minutes, 9 seconds, followed by JDHS cross-country coach Guy Thibodeau in 29:18. Dinnan's twin brother Tyler - also a cross-country runner for the Crimson Bears - was third in 29:47. Karlynn Welling was the first female finisher, in 36:26.

Saturday's race was the final event of the 2003 season for the Southeast Road Runners.
