Southeast Conference seeks energy solution

Posted: Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Southeast Conference is a private membership organization that works to advance the collective interests of the people, communities and businesses of Southeast Alaska. It is the Alaska Regional Development Organization, Federal Economic Development District and USDA Resource Conservation and Development Council for the region. The conference's mission is to help develop strong economies, healthy communities and a quality environment in Southeast Alaska.

Southeast Alaska is blessed with a plentiful - and renewable - source of hydroelectric potential. Southeast Conference is working within the region to promote its development and ensure that Alaskans receive the highest and best use of that resource.

Every community has short-term and long-term energy needs. Southeast Conference is working with each community to develop a strategy to meet both the individual and regional needs. We are most proud of our work on behalf of communities such as Kake that have few resources of their own. The Kake intertie project is finally making progress, giving hope to an economically devastated community where electrical rates were as high as 64 cents per kwh.

SEC is particularly grateful for the support from the Alaska Legislature, AEA and every community in the region as we put forward a plan for diesel independence. We agree with U.S. Sen. Mark Begich's assessment that the region must work together in order to achieve success. That is the mission of Southeast Conference: to develop strong economies, healthy communities and a quality environment in Southeast Alaska. For more information, visit
